Vance M Perry was
born in 1951, and showed an interest in art from an early age.
Vance was greatly
inspired by an eccentric uncle who shared his love for art projects including
drawing, painting. Together, he and Vance spent time looking and appreciating
what they saw in the world around them.
As a young man, Vance
took art classes at Idaho State University in the early 70's. Hen then moved to
Portland, Oregon, where he spent several semesters and a summer taking art
classes at Mt Hood Community College.
Vance's painting
instructor at Mt Hood Community College was Jay Backstrand, a well-known local,
regional and national painter. Vance was motivated by Jay to apply to the
Museum Art School located, at the time, in the Portland Art Museum in Downtown
Portland. Vance graduated from the Portland Art Museum with a BFS in painting
and ceramics, in 1980.
After graduation,
Vance spent the next thirty plus years as a designer and creator of handmade
ceramic tiles with a Portland Tile Company. A few years after retirement, Vance
and his wife moved to Central Oregon in 2015.
In 2015, Vance
reinvented himself as a painter in acrylic, oils and oil pastels. He is primarily
known for his abstracts, landscapes, portraits and animals. During the past
seven years, Vance has become known for his paintings throughout Oregon.
